Market Days

The marche du jour or market of the day is a pretty big deal in France.  A bon marche is part green grocer, fromagerie, butcher shop, wine merchant and town fair.  The marche at La Martre in the eastern reaches of Haut Var was all of those things.  Now I’m an olive guy so a dozen olive varieties and tapenades thereof make me downright giddy. Add pain l'ancienne, crusty bread made in the traditional method, and dry sausage and you've covered the three major food groups and have a picnic in the offing.  The three robust folks near the bottom have just enjoyed each of these delicacies and will henceforth be known as au trois porchons.
